Electrosurgical Instrument Speeds Tonsillectomy

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 24 Jan 2002
A new electrosurgical instrument is designed to seal small blood vessels cut during tonsil and adenoid removal, decrease procedural time, and improve the surgeon's ability to see the operative site. More...

The device, called IsoCool ENT (ear, nose, throat), stays significantly cooler than conventional instruments and prevents tissue from sticking to the device, thereby reducing tissue damage. IsoCool was developed by Seedling Enterprises (Newton, MA, USA), based on patented technology for continually cooling the tips of electrosurgical instruments. IsoCool instruments are compatible with existing electrosurgery generators currently in the operating room and thus do not require doctors to make any changes in surgical technique.

"This device cuts more smoothly and without the need for repetitive cleaning of the electrode tip as compared to current products,” said Dr. Daniel Kim, associate professor of otolaryngology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (Amherst, USA). "The ability to bend the instrument shaft makes customizing the instrument for each patient easy and convenient.”
