New Stent to Improve Coronary Luminal Diameter

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 24 Jul 2002
A new over-the-wire coronary stent is designed to improve coronary luminal diameter in patients with symptomatic ischemic heart disease due to untreated lesions and restenotic lesions in coronary arteries. More...
The stent has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Called Bx Sonic, the stent has a self-centering tip, engineered to facilitate smooth navigation and delivery in circuitous anatomy. The catheter utilizes a proprietary sealing process that provides seamless tip-to-balloon transition to cross challenging lesions more successfully. The stent is designed for use in arteries with reference diameters from 3.0 mm to 5.0 mm. It was developed by Cordis Corp. (Miami, FL, USA).

"In my experience, the Bx Sonic stent provides excellent deliverability even in complex cases including greater tortuosity and severely angulated lesions. These design enhancements make it easier to use this stent on more patients,” said Lawrence Title, M.D., of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center (Halifax, Canada).
