In a move that will increase its portfolio of sports medicine products, Conmed Corp. More...
(Utica, NY, USA) has agreed to acquire Bionx Implants, Inc. (Blue Bell, PA, USA) for about US$48 million.

Bionx develops and manufactures self-reinforced, resorbable polymer implants for use in a variety of orthopedic applications, including sports medicine and fracture fixation. The company is best known for the Meniscus Arrow bioabsorbable implant for repair of tears in the meniscus of the knee. Conmed specializes in instruments, implants, and video equipment for arthroscopic sports medicine and powered surgical instruments for orthopedic and other surgical specialties.

"The addition of the Bionx sports medicine and trauma products will provide us with increased product depth,” said Joseph J. Corasanti, president and COO of Conmed. "Bionx also brings important research and development capability in self-reinforced polymers. We plan to continue this research at the Bionx facilities in Pennsylvania and Tampere, Finland.”
