A conference focused on ways that emergency medical services can help to improve road traffic safety will be held October 12-14 in Dubai (UAE, United Arab Emirates), according to an announcement by Arab Health (Dubai). More...

Due to unsafe driving practices, the fatality rates of auto accidents are much higher in
the UAE than in other developing countries, a trend that has a large impact on emergency medical services. A recent regional report on the effectiveness of emergency medical services identified key issues that need to be addressed in the UAE. These include training police and civil defense staff in first aid and handling traffic injuries; equipping emergency response vehicles with state-of-the-art equipment; improving hospital emergency rooms; training medical teams to handle injuries at a crash site as well as at medical centers; and improving the coordination of police, emergency response teams, and medical services at traffic crashes.

The congress is sponsored by the UAE Ministry of Health; the Dubai Police and Ambulance Department; Hamad Medical Corp. (Qatar); Emergency Medical Services, Kuwait; and the Ministry of Health, Oman. Along with the congress, there will be an exhibition of products and services for the emergency medical services sector. A series of workshops for practicing ambulance paramedics will also be offered.

"And it is not just the public sector that needs to plan for dealing with medical emergencies. More and more companies, from major petroleum operations to shopping mall and hotel managers, realize the very real need to respond to medical emergencies on their premises,” noted Chris Mullinger, conference director of the organizers.
