Mobile Isolation Unit for Hospitals

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 23 Jun 2004
A self-contained mobile isolation unit contains all the facilities and tools needed for emergency response teams to properly isolate and treat highly contagious diseases such as anthrax and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The unit includes a wastewater treatment system, an ozone decontamination and disinfection system, and a computerized air-control system. More...
These units, ranging in price from U.S.$150,000 to$350,000, offer numerous configurations, including medical isolation, analysis, and containment of infectious disease; a biochemical research laboratory; medical diagnostics; morgue; or a weapons-of-mass-destruction isolation facility.

"Technologies of this nature have not previously been incorporated into a single unit capable of rapid transportation via ship, plane, or trailer to an area that has suffered an epidemic or contagious disease outbreak,” said Alfredo Teran, president of AJT & Associates (Cape Canaveral, FL, USA). "These units present a low-cost alternative to construction of independent facilities with similar isolation, containment, and disinfection capabilities.”

To develop the mobile isolation unit, AJT partnered with an engineering company called Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC, San Diego, CA, USA), building an easy-to-manage system from a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and AJT's software. "This PLC monitors alarms and issues maintenance messages while the software records environmental and water system performance, all communicated over secure systems,” noted Mr. Teran.
