Fully Automatic AED for Public Settings

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 02 Aug 2004
A new automated external defibrillator (AED) designed for use in public settings or in-home use is the first fully automatic AED in the Powerheart product line. More...
The device has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

To potentially save a life, a rescuer needs only to follow the detailed voice instructions explaining how to attach the device to a heart attack victim. There are no buttons to push or additional action required, since the Powerheart analyzes the patient's condition to detect a life-threatening heart rhythm and then, if appropriate, automatically delivers a potentially life-saving defibrillation shock to restore the heart to a normal rhythm. Powerheart products are manufactured and marketed by Cardiac Science, Inc. (Irvine, CA, USA).

"Rescue-Ready self-testing technology and advanced detection algorithms in a package that promises maintenance-free operation combine to make the Powerheart G3-Automatic the easiest-to-use AED on the market--bar none,” said Raymond W. Cohen, chairman and CEO of Cardiac Science. The company has been granted a U.S. patent that covers a publicly available portable defibrillator capable of being used by a bystander to automatically deliver life-saving shocks to a heart-attack victim.
