Neurostimulation Signal Blocks Phantom Pain

An innovative electrical nerve block (ENB) technology for modulating peripheral nerves offers significant reduction of aches in people with chronic amputation pain. More...

The Neuros Medical (Cleveland, OH, USA) ENB system is designed to effectively eliminate chronic pain in a variety of applications, including neuroma, residual limb pain (phantom pain), chronic postsurgical pain, and chronic migraine. The system works by delivering high-frequency stimulation to sensory nerves in the peripheral nervous system to block the chronic pain. The system consists of an electrode placed around a peripheral nerve and powered by a pacemaker-size generator implanted into the residual limb.

Researchers at the Kettering Health Network Innovation Center (Kettering, OH, USA) and the Ohio Pain Clinic (Dayton, USA) conducted a feasibility study of the patented high frequency ENB technology, focusing on patients with chronic amputation pain; during the study, four of the five patients reported their pain was reduced to zero.

"Providing such significant pain relief for the patients is outstanding,” said Amol Soin, MD, of Kettering. "A complete reduction is often unheard of, however the high frequency electrical nerve block technology showed the ability to do so, safely and consistently, and the strong potential it holds for patients suffering from chronic pain is very encouraging.”

"We are obviously very pleased with the results in reducing the patients' pain scores so significantly,” said Jon Snyder, president and CEO of Neuros Medical. "These impactful outcomes indicate a very bright future for the technology as a potential treatment for chronic pain.”
