Multifunction Physiological Monitor Is Wearable

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 25 May 2011
An unobtrusive wearable physiological monitoring platform delivers continuous, real-time patient data to healthcare professionals.

The LifeTouch HRV011 is an intelligent cardiac monitor that resembles a lightweight adhesive bandage strip that adheres to the patient's body and analyzes the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal of every heartbeat, at a rate four to five times greater than the standard required for ECG monitors. More...
This allows a range of new analytical techniques and algorithms that can run on an advanced ultra-low power microprocessor integrated into the device. The sensing platform uses a very low power microcontroller as well as a wireless link that uses an ultra-low power wireless protocol. These inherently low power consumption components, together with efficient algorithms, provide a continuous working lifetime of up to 100 hours.

The device continuously measures and digitizes the ECG signal, as well as other key physiological parameters, including heart rate, high-resolution QRS intervals, and other heart rate variability parameters that are used, among other things, to derive the respiration rate using a proprietary multiparameter algorithm. Fundamental or derived data (or both) are sent to a secure HL7 compliant database, where it can be stored and integrated with other patient information, or forwarded and accessed by authorized users. Further analysis can be carried out on the data to provide more information about the patient, such as indicators of stress and health-warning scores, and can be used to generate alerts or prompts regarding patient status. The LifeTouch HRV011 is a product of Isansys Lifecare Limited (Abingdon, United Kingdom).

"The power of our Lifecare Platform is that this information can be delivered in a customized form from a secure database to an authorized care provider anywhere,” said Keith Errey, CEO of Isansys Lifecare. "For patients we are introducing a fuss-free, unobtrusive device that may be worn under clothing and requires no adjustment, calibration, recharging, or battery changing.”

A key element of the Isansys LifeTouch is a recycling service that recovers, sterilizes, and refurbishes the electronic module (including the battery), and replaces the medical grade laminate materials that form the substrate and enclosure for the electronic module, before retesting and repackaging for subsequent reuse. This service approach ensures all the benefits of disposable devices while maintaining adherence to good environmental practice and substantially reduces the effective cost of the devices.
