Inhalation Device Promotes Smoking Cessation Therapy

A novel electronic inhaler for nicotine replacement therapy looks like a typical e-cigarette, but could also be used as a part of a wider smoking cessation-therapy approach.

The Nicadex hand-held electronic inhaler is a vaporizer powered by a rechargeable lithium battery that instantly delivers purified nicotine to the user through the vaporization of a pharmaceutical-grade solution of nicotine. More...
Many users have reported that the sensation of using the Nicadex device is similar to smoking, but the vapor contains no smoke and none of the carbon monoxide, tar, or thousands of toxic impurities that make smoking tobacco products so damaging. In addition, since there is no smoke, there are no smoke by-products that can cause “second-hand” harm to others.

Developed by CN Creative (Manchester, United Kingdom), the smoking cessation expertise, and the technology innovations were first deployed in the company’s Intellicig electronic cigarettes and the ECOpure proprietary high purity nicotine preparations. The Nicadex, which is now in final prototype stage, with clinical studies expected to be conducted early in 2012, is also expected to increase the smokers' chances of ending or reducing their reliance on smoking, by serving as a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) device.

“CN Creative provides innovative approaches to reduce the harm caused by smoking, by helping smokers quit whenever possible or reduce their consumption of cigarettes when total abstinence is not achievable,” said David Newns, a cofounder and company director of CN Creative. “We believe our Nicadex electronic inhaler NRT has the potential to help significant numbers of smokers stop entirely or significantly reduce their exposure to harmful tobacco smoke.”

Smoking cessation therapy involving NRT is the remedial administration of nicotine to the body by means other than tobacco. Common forms of nicotine replacement therapy are nicotine patches (which transdermally administers nicotine), nicotine gum (which orally administers nicotine), and electronic cigarettes. The primary benefit of NRT is that it prevents cravings in a smoker while allowing them to abstain from tobacco.
