Newborn Resuscitation System Delivers Reliable Airway Management

A stand-alone neonatal resuscitation system uses advanced technology and innovative design to deliver life-saving capabilities virtually anywhere. More...

The Giraffe Stand-alone Resuscitation System offers effective, reliable airway management, from labor and delivery rooms to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The system offers quick and unobstructed access to suction, blended gases, and monitored positive pressure capability. Multiple flexible mounting options, from roll stand to GCX arms are offered, and the system can also be easily mounted on the Giraffe Shuttle transportable power source for intra-hospital transport.

Gentle ventilation is used to stimulate breathing, with a dual flow meter designed to deliver consistent flow. An integrated Oxygen (O2) blender can swiftly change oxygen concentrations from 21%-100%. Circulation can be closely monitored to accurately evaluate the patient’s pulse rate and oxygenation throughout the process. The fully integrated, gas-powered suction helps to quickly clear the airway to a suction canister holder that accommodates various sizes, and is easily accessible for single-patient use.

The resuscitation system can use both standard bag-and-mask and the T-Piece system configuration, which provides for more consistent pressure delivery when compared to the manual self- or flow-inflating resuscitator bags. The T-Piece also allows for precise and controlled Peak Inspiratory Pressure (PIP) and Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) monitoring, which are essential for adequate oxygenation and functional residual capacity.

The values are set prior to resuscitation, and are thus maintained automatically throughout the procedure. As an added precaution, a PIP safety valve can be activated with just one hand, allowing adjustment to 30 cmH2O without interrupting the procedure, and up to 45 cmH2O to help ensure that maximum pressure is not exceeded. The improved adjustment procedure of the T-Piece system results in an approximately three-times faster transition to desired pressure, and correspondingly fewer breaths within the transition time. The Giraffe Stand-alone Resuscitation System is a product of GE Healthcare (Little Chalfont, United Kingdom).
