Platelet Concentration System Optimizes Conditions for Healing

An updated platelet concentration system produces Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a blood plasma with highly concentrated platelets that also contain natural growth factors that help optimize conditions for healing.

The Harvest SmartPReP 2 Platelet Concentrate System is designed to produce autologous platelet concentrate enriched with growth factors (APC+) in less than 15 minutes, which can then be used to improve the handling characteristics of graft material, facilitate fixation of graft material to the surgical site, and help optimize conditions for healing. The system is based on self-calibrating, floating shelf technology that automatically optimizes platelet recovery for every patient, and can process as little as 20 cc of whole blood for smaller applications in additional to larger volumes when needed.

The unique automated dual-spin and decanting process, coupled with self-calibrating disposables, makes the system significantly easier to use than more complex systems by using state-of-the-art sensors and controls that maximize platelet recovery while eliminating operator interaction. The floating shelf technology also ensures optimal results independent of patient hematocrit, blood volume processed, or operator, as well as eliminating product weighing or multiple manipulations of blood bags and tests tubes. The Terumo SmartPReP 2 Platelet Concentrate System is a product of Harvest Technologies (Plymouth, MA, USA).

“The SmartPReP 2 System has allowed me to effectively deliver the highest possible concentration of PRP in a simple and sterile system that is extremely easy to use,” said Scott Sondes, MD, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist in Covington (LA, USA). “I've treated patients with knee issues and, within two weeks, patients exhibited improvement and demonstrated a high level of function.”

PRP is blood plasma with highly concentrated platelets that can exceed 2 million platelets per micro liter. Seven fundamental protein growth factors are concentrated, including platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFaa, PDGFab, PDGFbb), transforming growth factors (TGFb1, TGFb2), vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), and epithelial growth factors (EGF). The concentrate also contains three proteins that act as cell adhesion molecules: fibrin, fibronectin, and vitronectin. Since PRP is autologous, there is no rejection or adverse effects.
