Posted on 15 Oct 2012
A new dual-use adult fingertip oximeter has an additional port to attach a proprietary newborn Y-probe sensor for infant pulse oximetry (SpO2) screening.

The Hopkins Newborn & Mom kit is a novel two-in-one device that can function either as a stand-alone adult fingertip device or as a dual-purpose meter via a removable neonatal Y-probe sensor. More...
The kit also contains a carrying case, alcohol wipes, and pulse oximeter wraps to secure the Y-probe to the infant patient. Among the features of the oximeter are perfusion index trending and a rotatable color organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display. The Hopkins Newborn & Mom kit is a product of Hopkins Medical Products (Baltimore, MD, USA).

“We wanted to have a cost effective option for care providers to perform pulse oximetry screenings on infant and neonatal patients outside the hospital setting,” said C. Louis Klug III, vice president and general manager of Hopkins Medical Products. “The all-inclusive kit and compact design makes it very easy to transport from location to location.”

Neonatal pulse oximetry screening has become an import test used to screen for critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs), which account for nearly 3% of infant mortality during the first year of life and affects between seven and nine of every 1,000 newborns. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; Atlanta, GA, USA), approximately 4,800 babies are born in the United States every year that have one of seven different CCHDs.
