Personal Dosimeter Detects N2O Contamination

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 10 Dec 2002
To reduce the exposure of healthcare workers to nitrous oxide, a personal dosimeter monitors and detects leaks of N2O from a tracheal tube or laryngeal mask or a leak of anesthetic gases.

The portable hand-held dosimeter measures nitrous oxide and is equipped with alarm lamps. More...
It is designed for use in the working environment of anesthetic personnel or in other environments where nitrous oxide is present. Different colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) indicate when limits are reached or exceeded. The dosimeter, called N2O Gasfinder, is designed to be compatible with the standard attachments of most anesthetic equipment.

Repeated and extended exposure of healthcare workers to nitrous oxide is an important concern the world over. Unfortunately, measurements of a particular environment or room are performed perhaps only once a month or once a year, says Medair AB, which developed the N2O Gasfinder (Delsbo, Sweden; www.medair.se). The company has also developed other monitoring devices utilizing its gas-analyzing technology. These include monitors for respiratory function and CO2.
