Instrument to Test AED Performance

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Mar 2003
A new handheld test instrument verifies the performance of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), so users can be assured they are working properly.

The micro-controller-based instrument allows the user to select from several simulated heart attack waveforms for the AED to detect and analyze. More...
When the AED recognizes dangerous waveforms, it will either automatically charge the defibrillator or alert the user to manually charge the defibrillator. The instrument measures this discharge energy, or shock. Called the Delta 1500, the instrument can be manually operated or can run an automatic test sequence and is powered by a nine-volt battery. It is the product of Netech Corp. (Hicksville, NY, USA).

"AEDs are rapidly becoming an essential part of lifesaving,” said Ron Shepard, vice president of Netech Corp. "The Delta 1500 is the first inexpensive instrument designed to test the functions of any automatic or semi-automatic defibrillator.”
