Collagen Technology with Diverse Applications

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 15 Jan 2004
New collagen technology has application in tissue repair and regeneration in neurosurgical, cardiovascular, dermatologic, and oral surgery areas.

The technology, called DuraMatrix, was developed by Collagen Matrix, Inc. More...
(Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA; www). In the neurosurgical area, the company has received the CE Mark for its collagen Dura Membrane for repair of the dura mater of the brain. DuraMatrix can be used both as an onlay and a suturable graft. The company has also received the CE Mark and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of its collagen nerve cuff for peripheral nerve repair. With funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), the company is developing a bioactive nerve guide to bridge peripheral nerve defects that are longer than 4 cm. Currently, there is no product available to address these gaps.

Other products/devices in development include collagen-based devices for the treatment of cerebral saccular and wide-neck aneurysms, a resorbable collagen coating for the surface modification of aneurysm coils, a resorbable collagen coating for drug-eluting stents, and a wound dressing for dermatologic chronic wounds.

"We are very excited about the prospects of the collagen technology developed at Collagen Matrix and its potential applications for tissue repair and regeneration. Particularly, our matrix engineering technology is the foundation for tissue engineering product development for the treatment of diseased internal organs,” said Dr. Shu-Tung Li, founder and CEO of Collagen Matrix.
