Innovative Heel Incision Device Provides Safety and Comfort

A new infant lancing device, used for taking blood test samples, is a safe, easy, and effective solution for newborn heel incisions.

The babyLance heel incision device incorporates unique design characteristics that deliver incision depths that are optimal for infant heel sticks, via a cutting blade with a swift pendulum cutting action that creates a single perfect cut, reducing the pain felt during incision. More...
The reduced trigger activation force also significantly reduces the risk of bruising. A unique positioning design facilitates a stable and accurate placement against the targeted section of the infant's heel, while ensuring the procedure can be performed consistently and quickly. An activation mechanism improves the incision performance by reducing the penetration depth, thus avoiding puncturing any soft bone tissue of the infant.

The babyLance device complies with established procedure guidelines, and is available in two lance depth sizes; the babyLance Newborn (BLN), which delivers an incision depth of 1 mm, and the babyLance Preemie (BLP), which delivers an incision depth of 0.85 mm, removing the need for conventional needle pricking of fingers. The babyLance is a product of MediPurpose (Singapore), and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug administration (FDA).

"We are very excited about this latest addition to our blood collection medical product portfolio,” said Patrick Yi, founder and CEO of MediPurpose. "It's been 10 years since we launched our first product, the SurgiLance safety lancet, and we are eager about offering this innovative new product to our customers.”

Heel lancing is the most common method of obtaining a blood sample in newborn and preterm infants, and is used especially for various genetic screenings such as for phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism.
