Novel Torque Limiting Instruments for Orthopedic Surgeons

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 05 Nov 2012
New single-procedure surgical kits provide consistently accurate torque to secure implant screws, fasteners, and connectors, while reducing per procedure costs.

The ECA Model 900 series of disposable surgical instruments includes three single-procedure surgical kit configurations for general orthopedic reconstructive surgery, such as hip, knee, shoulder, and craniomaxillofacial procedures; spinal fusion surgery; and small bone and trauma implants such as in the clavicle, hands, and feet. The use of disposable torque limiting surgical kits eliminates the risk of hospital-acquired infection (HAI), and allows more efficient use of hospital operating rooms. Other considerations include reduced inventory levels and operating costs with the elimination of recurring operational overhead to support reusable instruments.

The Model 900 series of surgical instruments are made of engineered polymers and surgical stainless steel materials, and produced in Class 7 clean rooms under strict quality controls. Each kit includes several popular torque-limiting and fixed-driver instruments regularly used to fix and secure orthopedic implants, including a variety of plates, braces, brackets, and rods that need to be secured within precise torque parameters of the matching fasteners and connectors. The kits therefore include torque instruments ranging from a light 6.895 and to 620 kPa, for securing knee and hip implants. The ECA Model 900 series are products of ECA Medical Instruments (Newbury Park, CA, USA).

“The Model 900 series of surgical kits were created in response to industry demand by surgeons and hospitals for precision and low cost torque instruments to drive out costs and guarantee accurate torque for the complete range of orthopedic procedures,” said John Nino, president and CEO of ECA. “Current torque devices can fall out of calibration. They require regular factory checks and recalibration, need costly and meticulous cleaning and resterilization after each procedure. In contrast, ECA's disposable instruments and kits are factory set and precise each time, come sterile packed ready for use in the operating room with the intended implant and can be recycled after use.”
