Endoscopic System Reduces Procedure Costs by Half

A new, cost-effective endoscopic option for urological procedures helps visualize body cavities or organs.

The Flexor Vue Deflecting Endoscopic System is typically used for flexible ureteroscopy, but can also be used in other kidney and bladder procedures. More...
The system includes a one-time-use disposable sheath, a 3-mm bundle of fiber optics, and a visualization source that can be reused up to ten times with careful handling. The cost of the system is 50% less than a normal endoscopic system and it is available off the shelf, thus aimed at physicians who do not require a cystoscopy or ureteroscopy for managing stone, kidney, and bladder procedures.

Among the benefits of the system are significant reductions in risk of patient-to-patient biological cross-contamination, due to the device’s disposable nature; elimination of the need for costly repairs and/or replacement of a scope if damaged; and an improved cost accounting on a per-case basis. The Flexor Vue Deflecting Endoscopic System is a product of Cook Medical (Bloomington, IN, USA; www.cookmedical.com), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“We believe the Flexor Vue will support physicians in many cases,” said Jean-Marc Creissel, global leader of Cook’s Urology division. “The system ensures that they will not have to reschedule procedures because their scope breaks or isn’t sterile. The Flexor Vue is convenient, disposable and could improve patient safety by preventing patient-to-patient contamination.”
