New Laparoscopic System Makes Trocar Use Redundant

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 29 Mar 2015
A novel percutaneous surgical system does not require introductory trocars, thus leaving only a tiny mark on the patient’s skin following the procedure.

The Percuvance Percutaneous Surgical System is a micro-laparoscopic platform that is comprised of nine unique components, combined in various configurations to create a multifunctional set of instruments for laparoscopic procedures. More...
It is based on a shaft with a diameter of 2.9 mm diameter, which is inserted percutaneously using a Veress introducer needle tip. It can then be connected extracorporeally via a reusable handle to a wide variety of interchangeable five-mm (full size) end effector surgical tool tips, including Metzenbaum scissors, Gripper grasper, Johans grasper, and a Maryland dissector.

The smaller diameter shaft is still sufficiently strong to hold structures while the surgeon uses the interchangeable tool tips to grasp, cut, and manipulate tissue. A proprietary seal bridge, available in two sizes (5 mm and 12 mm), is used to protect the seal and to aid in maintaining insufflation, as well as to facilitate the extracorporeal exchange of the end effectors. In addition, procedures using the Percuvance System require fewer trocars and cause less trauma and better cosmesis during healing.

Additional benefits include a short surgeon learning curve with fewer adjustments necessary to the surgeons’ current techniques, as well as an institutional saving on the costs associated with capital, service, and fully disposable technologies. The Percuvance Percutaneous Surgical System is a product of Teleflex (Limerick, PA, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has also received the European Community CE marking of approval.

The Percuvance System complements another Teleflex product, the MiniLap Percutaneous Surgical System, which provides delivery and function through an integrated, disposable 2.3-mm device. Like the Percuvance System, the MiniLap System does not require a trocar and makes minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures less invasive.
