Reading Vital Signs From the Wrist

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Oct 2006
A highly accurate noninvasive continuous blood pressure monitoring system reads vital signs from a bracelet-like device on the wrist. More...

The Fusion vital signs monitor is a completely sensor-based blood pressure monitor based on proprietary sensor-based blood pressure technology, with other optional vital signs monitoring sensors. The core technology has been the subject of numerous independent clinical validation studies, and results have shown that accuracy is comparable to an invasive arterial catheter. The monitor can also incorporate sensor-based pulse oxymetry and thermometry, creating a complete, non-invasive, vital signs solution. The system has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA).

The Fusion system was developed by Medwave (Danvers, MA, USA). The optional, sensor-based pulse oxymetry module is manufactured by Nellcor (Pleasanton, CA, USA)) and the thermometry module is made by Kendall (Mansfield, MA, USA), both operating companies of Tyco Healthcare Group (Mansfield, MA, USA).

"Fusion represents a turning point in the way health providers care for their patients, said Medwave CEO Tim O'Malley. "They now have a device to continually monitor vital signs without invasive techniques. Our sensor-based technologies represent an important step toward creating a better, easier and more comfortable healthcare experience for patients.”
