Foam Strip Protects Teeth During Intubation

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 07 Nov 2006
A disposable foam strip has been designed to prevent anesthesiologists, emergency medical teams (EMTs), paramedics, and emergency room (ER) personnel from exfoliating patients' teeth during intubation.

Dentasafe is a medical-grade, elastic, hypoallergenic, and latex-free foam strip, designed to stretch and conform while providing the flexibility to maneuver intubations with ease, even during the most difficult intubations. More...
The strip prevents costly damage to the upper incisors, which are the most frequently affected teeth during intubation. When the intubation is completed successfully and the laryngoscope is removed from the patient's mouth, the strip is peeled back from the blade using a pull tab.

The single-use, disposable foam strip attaches to the flange of the laryngoscope blade and prevents direct contact between the metallic blade and the patient's upper teeth. It is applied by peeling the self-adhering strip using a grip tab and pressing the strip against the blade. Two foam strips are packaged in a sealed film pouch, and 25 pouches are packed in each box.

Dentasafe is a product of Salomon Medical Innovations (Rockville, MD, USA).

Dental injury is well-recognized as a potential complication of laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Patients most at risk for perianesthetic dental injury include those with preexisting poor dentition who have one or more risk factors for difficult laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.
