Cryoanesthetic Mouthpiece Offers Dental Pain Relief in Seconds

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 24 Dec 2007
A dental mouthpiece that is available over the counter (OTC) can be used on its own or in conjunction with conventional anesthesia to provide pain relief without the side effects or complications of drugs.

The gumEase G-100 is an easy-to-use, latex-free, disposable device that is inserted into the upper and lower sulci, where it then delivers a soothing, cool temperature to the maxillofacial nerves, quickly diminishing pain across a wide area of the mouth. More...
The mouthpiece is prepared by storing in a conventional freezer until sub-zero temperature is reached. Proprietary solutions inside the mouthpiece prevent it from freezing, allowing it to form comfortably within the patient's mouth for several minutes. Pain reduction of 90% is achieved in two to three minutes, and lasts for up to twenty minutes; the process can be repeated as often as needed. The device also holds promise for situations where needle use is limited or avoided, such as patient needle phobia. The gumEase G-100 is a product of BioMeDevice (Laguna Hills, CA, USA), and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"It gives dentists an option they didn't have before”, said Tay McClellan, BioMeDevice CTO. "They can manage patient pain easily in a wider range of situations. Now it's not a problem to have a patient who can't use drug-based anesthesia.”
