An Easier Way for COPD Patients to Breathe

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 13 Aug 2008
A hands-free oxygen concentrator, which weighs less than two kilograms, will help people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other breathing problems lead normal lives. More...

The LifeChoice portable oxygen concentrator (POC) was designed to be both a stationary and a portable oxygen source, with user-friendly controls and an easy to read keypad. The concentrator converts normal air to nearly pure oxygen and never needs to be hooked up to an oxygen tank. A pulse mode system delivers oxygen equivalent to a continuous flow of one, two and three liter-per-minute (LPM), and is equipped with state of the art "Sleep Mode” technology, which alters the sensitivity level of the POC so that the device can trigger at very shallow breaths. The LifeChoice is capable of providing at least 2 hours of remote portability at a minimum of two LPM, a battery charger, a power adaptor, and a carry bag. The POC uses two compressors that last approximately 100,000 hours, guaranteed by the manufacturer to last for three years. The unit requires no maintenance and comes with a four-hour external battery. The LifeChoice oxygen concentrator is a product of International Biophysics Corporation (IBC, Austin, TX, USA).

"This newest generation oxygen concentrator, with its unique technology and portability will have a profound effect on these patients' quality of life and should improve their longevity,” said Dr. Robert Emerson, head of the pulmonary division at the Austin Diagnostic Clinic (TX, USA). "This is a source of constant oxygen which is as portable as a laptop but weighs less than my wife's purse.”
