Innovative Defibrillator Monitors Carbon Monoxide

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 11 Jan 2010
An upgraded defibrillator with integrated carbon monoxide (CO) measurement allows emergency medical services (EMS) responders to easily and accurately diagnose CO poisoning with the simple push of a button.

The Zoll E Series defibrillators with integrated Masimo CO-Oximetry allow rescuers to diagnose CO poisoning easily and accurately on location, an essential element in determining immediate on-scene treatment. More...
With early detection, treatment for CO poisoning can begin immediately, which significantly reduces immediate and long-term health risks for both firefighters and the civilians whom they serve. The E Series defibrillators also feature proprietary See-Thru cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which filters out the CPR artifact during monitoring, allowing rescuers to see organized rhythms without interrupting chest compressions. Like all other ZOLL defibrillators, the E Series also provides the Real CPR Help feature, which improves CPR quality by providing real-time feedback on the rate and depth of chest compressions.

With a new innovative roll cage design and shape, a rapid cable deployment system for faster deployment, a display screen that can be used in both pitch darkness or direct sunlight, and a built-in GPS clock, the defibrillator can be used in any emergency. An integrated optional Bluetooth functionality provides data transmission capability to a variety of destinations. Proprietary biphasic waveform enables conversion of ventricular fibrillation in high impedance patients, and a wireless 12-lead transmission feature offers improved ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) management. The ZOLL E Series defibrillators are a product of ZOLL Medical (Chelmsford, MA, USA).

"Integrating CO-Oximetry into the E Series Monitor/Defibrillator adds a critical, life-saving tool for medics to use in emergency situations when every second counts,” said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL. "This new feature will help alleviate some of the long-term health conditions associated with undetected CO poisoning.”

CO measurements help rescuers noninvasively and immediately diagnose CO poisoning. Undetected, untreated episodes can lead to permanent neurological and cardiac damage, and often death. Even one severe incident of CO poisoning almost doubles the risk of premature death.
