Diagnostic Device Provides Wireless Remote Patient ECG Monitoring

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 16 Feb 2010
A hand-held patient-activated device wirelessly records and transmits reconstructed 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs), acquired via fully integrated electrodes and proprietary signal processing algorithms.

The CardioBip wireless remote patient monitoring device is a unique, hand held device that offers a solution to the problem of urgent ECG telemonitoring, capable of providing comprehensive and accurate ECG data, which is transmitted wirelessly. More...
The CardioBip device employs only three integrated electrodes, with the ability to generate a standard 12 lead ECG recording. Recordings are made by holding the instrument against the patient's chest, similar to single lead devices. The data collected provides sufficient information to allow accurate, immediate reconstruction of a complete 12-lead ECG from a calibrated, patient-specific transformation matrix. Additionally, the absence of any cables and the integrated nature of its electrodes offer the potential for fast networking with most hand held personal digital assistant (PDA) platforms.

The CardioBip-transmitted data may also be analyzed with Visual3Dx, a proprietary set of algorithms and tools that provide a method of generating a 3D representation of cardiac electrical activity as a function of time, superimposing the diagnostically relevant electrical information on an intuitive, revolving 3D anatomic model of the heart. Visual3Dx includes algorithms to normalize electrical attenuation, which results in a "virtual sphere" of normalized electrical activity, ensuring accurate and balanced representation of all heart regions. Visual3Dx also displays the standard ECG along with the 3D analytical presentation, which allows the physician to make correlations between both displays. The CardioBip device and Visual3Dx software are products of NewCardio (Santa Clara, CA, USA).

"NewCardio is committed to bringing significant value to each of the more than a quarter billion ECGs performed annually,” said Dr. Branislav Vajdic, CEO of NewCardio. "Our platform technology supports a wide-range of applications, and we are increasingly proud and excited about CardioBip's potential role in remote wireless monitoring of millions of patients with heart disease.”
