All-in-One System for Treating Varicose Veins

The minimally invasive Trivex procedure uses a technique called transilluminated powered phlebectomy. Transillumination, much like a flashlight placed under the skin, allows a surgeon to see, accurately target, and remove varicose veins, then visually confirm the extraction. Traditional varicose vein surgery is considered a ‘blind procedure,” meaning surgeons cannot see the vein or confirm removal.

The improvements are based on clinical feedback from surgeons, according to Smith & Nephew (Andover, MA, USA), which is marketing Trivex. The new features include user-friendly ergonomic foot switches and hand controls, together with lightweight materials.

"Traditional varicose vein removal procedures were painful for patients and arduous for surgeons. As a result, patients delayed treatment and a limited number of surgeons offered the surgery,” noted Gregory Spitz, M.D., Rush-Copley Medical Center (Aurora, IL, USA), inventor of the Trivex System developed with Smith & Nephew.
