Command Center Controls Operating Rooms

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 07 Apr 2006
A new surgical command center for operating rooms (ORs) puts medical staff in control of devices, patient information, and even the lighting and temperature of the OR.

The CONDOR (CONtrol of Digital OR) system, from the endoscopy division of Smith & Nephew (Andover, MA, USA), is a surgical command center intended for ORs that puts medical staff in control of all pertinent areas relating to a procedure. More...
The control system is designed as the nucleus of Smith & Nephew's Digital ORs, customized surgical solutions designed to improve patient care and operating room efficiency. The system is modular and can be configured to work with a hospital's existing information systems, and it can be upgraded as new features and technology are released

The CONDOR technology makes it possible for a medical team to send commands to medical devices, digital cameras, image-management systems, and other components, using voice commands and a wireless touch panel. It can integrate with other systems that create and manage information, such as radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags, enabling tracking of equipment and automatic reordering of disposables. The system also enables real-time streaming audio and video of a procedure over the Internet to classrooms, offices, and consulting surgeons in other locations, even around the world.

The CONDOR control system enables surgeons to offer their patients top-level medical care in a way that's efficient and cost-effective for their own businesses, said Sal Chiovari, vice president of Digital OR at Smith & Nephew. The system is designed to be flexible and convenient to use and intuitive to learn.
