Novel Spine System Treats Deformity in Small-Stature Patients

A titanium and stainless steel hook, rod, and screw system has been designed to treat complex spinal deformity in small-stature patients.

The Expedium 4.5 Spine System is a complete set of in-line, low-profile implants designed to reduce the disruption of soft tissue and overcome cosmetic challenges in smaller anatomies. More...
Intuitive instrumentation offers surgeons tactile feedback and greater control over debilitating pathologies, without the limitations commonly associated with small stature instrumentation sets. The system is intended for noncervical pedicle fixation and nonpedicle fixation for the following indications: degenerative disc disease (defined as back pain of discogenic origin with degeneration of the disc confirmed by history and radiographic studies); spondylolisthesis; trauma (i.e., fracture or dislocation); spinal stenosis; curvatures (i.e., scoliosis, kyphosis, and/or lordosis); tumor; pseudarthrosis; and failed previous fusion.

The system includes longitudinal rods of various diameters (4.5, 5.5 and 6.35 mm), monoaxial, polyaxial, and uniplanar screws, reduction screws and hooks, transverse and dual-rod connectors, sacral extenders, and washers. The system also includes anterior options for the treatment of disorders affecting the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine. The Expedium 4.5 Spine System is a product of DePuy Spine (Raynham, MA, USA), a Johnson & Johnson company (New Brunswick, NJ, USA).

"Expedium is one of the most versatile spine systems on the market and now we can use it even more effectively for small-stature patients,” said Peter Newton, M.D., a surgeon from Rady Children's Hospital (San Diego, CA., USA). "The Expedium 4.5 spine system was designed specifically for the smaller anatomies, providing a combination of exceptional low profile and optimal rod handling characteristics, both of which are required to facilitate correction of spinal deformities in small-stature patients.”
