LED Lamp Illuminates the Operating Field

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 03 Feb 2010
A light emitting diode (LED) based surgical lamp offers reduced dimensions, low energy consumption, high performance, lack of heat, and a superior color-rendering index.

The STARLED 5 is composed of 50 LEDs circularly positioned around a positioning handle, generating a light spot of 21 centimeters circumference at one-meter distance, with a high illumination level of 135,000 lx and a steady life cycle of 50,000 hours. More...
A color rendering index of 95 with a temperature level of 4,900 K allow reproduction of the exact chromatic scale of the colors of the human body. Additionally, the use of LED light sources ensures an infrared (IR)-free light beam source, eliminating heat radiation under the lamp and on the surgeons.

According to the needs in the operating room (OR), several configuration options are available, including a twin STARLED 5 configuration and a combination that includes the complimentary OT-STARLED system; in both cases, the lamps operate in a synchronized command mode that allow them to be managed by a single operator. The lamp is shaped to avoid obstruction of the airflow in the operating field, especially with laminar flow systems, thus reducing turbulence areas.

To achieve correct illumination of the surgical field, based upon on the needs of the surgical team, the STARLED 5 can produce a focused as well as a uniform ambient light field, thanks to a manual focusing system integrated into the central grip handle of the lamp. The handle can also be extracted and autoclaved, and if needed, a fixed focus or zoom equipped video camera con be mounted on the handle for constant recording of the intervention. Additional lateral handles help the medical team reposition the surgical light to assure constant illumination. The STARLED 5 and the STARLED series are products of ACEM Medical (Bologna, Italy).

The STARLED 5 is also equipped with the proprietary Light-Up system, which utilizes beams of light coming from the superior part of the lamp to create strain-free visualization for the surgical team, exacting illumination of the surgical field, and glare-free viewing via microscopes and on microsurgery monitors.
