Innovative Thoracic Patch Seals air Leaks During Lung Surgery

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 22 Jun 2010
Softening as it hydrates to become a film that conforms to complex surfaces, a new thoracic patch has the flexibility to adhere to dynamic, stretching tissues.

The TissuePatchThoracic is an ultra thin resilient adhesive film that works by bonding to proteins on the surface of internal organs and tissues, enhancing traditional suture or staple line closure and supporting the healing tissues. More...
The Patch requires no advance preparation, and is easy to apply to often complex and varied tissue surfaces. The TissuePatch maintains the same thickness wherever it is applied (in contrast to liquid sealants that tend to well) and adherence to tissue surfaces is strong.

In addition to the patch itself, which is available in a range of dedicated sizes, specialized instruments enable surgeons also to use the product in minimally invasive video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). A uniquely designed loading device delivers the patch directly from the sterile packaging into a delivery tube in one swift movement, ready to be dispensed directly onto the target area. The TissuePatchThoracic is a product of Tissuemed (Leeds, United Kingdom; www.tissuemed.com).

"Surgeons tell me that air leaks are always a problem in thoracic surgery. With the introduction of TissuePatchThoracic we believe we have addressed the key challenge of providing a solution that is easy to use, effective, and economically justifiable,” said Nick Woods, CEO of Tissuemed. "Reducing time in hospital is better for patients and represents a significant potential cost saving, all important in these days of squeezed budgets and focus on economic outcomes.”
