Innovative Advance in Mobile Bearing Knee Design

A revolutionary mobile-bearing knee provides an anteriorly positioned pivot near the entry point of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), replicating the anatomic center of knee rotation.

The Zimmer NexGen LPS-Flex mobile bearing knee with Prolong highly cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is indicated for patients with severe knee pain and disability due to osteoarthritis (OA), primary and secondary traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral condyle, moderate valgus, varus, or flexion deformities. It is contra-indicated in patients with previous history of infection in the affected joint, insufficient bone stock on femoral or tibial surfaces, neuropathic arthropathy, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and an ulcer of the skin due to a higher risk of postoperative infection.

The NexGen LPS-Flex is a semi-constrained, posterior-stabilized, rotating platform mobile bearing total knee prosthesis, which utilizes four main components; the LPS-flex femoral component, the LPS-Mobile tibial articular surface component, a fluted stem mobile tibial baseplate component, and the XLPE patella component, which rotates on the highly polished trunnion of the tibial baseplate. The intraosseous components are nonporous and made of cast cobalt chromium molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy. In laboratory simulations, the XLPE mobile bearing knee demonstrated an 83% wear reduction compared to conventional polyethylene. The Zimmer NexGen LPS-Flex mobile bearing knee is a product of Zimmer (Warsaw, IN, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"Our Prolong highly cross-linked polyethylene provides a number of clinical advantages, including reduced wear and delamination resistance,” said Jeff McCaulley, president of reconstructive business at Zimmer. "Applying this exciting material to our already successful NexGen LPS-Flex mobile bearing knee system represents a major step forward in mobile bearing design.”
