Illuminated Breast Retractor Lights up the Surgical Field

Innovative technology integrates a light source with tissue retractors, illuminating the surgical field from several different angles, thus eliminating shadows, reflections, and glare. More...

The Eigr Illuminated Breast Retractor is intended for breast mastectomies, lumpectomies, sentinel node biopsies, and reconstruction procedures. The system includes different sized retractor blades, designed for various approaches. A fiber optic cable transmits the light emitted from standard surgical light sources to the distal part of the retractor, thus keeping the blade cool and allowing a lightweight, low-profile configuration. The retractor blade is manufactured from anodized aluminum and is insulated from electrosurgical devices.

The proprietary technology utilizes unique optical structures to control light output to a targeted operative space, directing the light from multiple angles and efficiently managing light across a broad output surface. This optical enhancement virtually eliminates shadows, back reflection, glare, and thermal effects such as overheating. The resulting illumination boosts visualization, which is critical, particularly in skin and nipple-sparing mastectomies. The Eigr Illuminated Breast Retractor is a product of Invuity (San Francisco, CA, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“As a breast cancer surgeon for more than 30 years, I have closely followed the advances in surgical techniques with respect to breast conservation surgery,” said Stephen DeSantis, MD, chairman of the department of surgery at Mission Hospital (Mission Viejo, CA, USA). “Invuity's Eigr technology enables me to perform advanced breast procedures with remarkable visualization. This is truly an enabling technology that will be greatly appreciated by dedicated breast surgeons and plastic surgeons.”

“Invuity's Eigr breast retractor system is the result of close collaboration with breast cancer surgeons to understand their need to visualize structures better during less invasive procedures,” added Philip Sawyer, CEO of Invuity. “As a result, Invuity provides critical tools to aid in these procedures.”
