Fine Needle Aspiration System Aids Endoscopic Ultrasound Applications

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 23 Apr 2012
An innovative delivery system for endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS FNA) improves efficiency and safety by using interchangeable needle sizes.

The BNX system is engineered to improve clinical workflow by facilitating the passage of multiple needles through a single delivery system, so that the needles can be rapidly exchanged without reducing the down time between needle passes. More...
When the needles are removed from the delivery system, they automatically integrate into an automated safety needle shield, designed to reduce the human errors--such as manually screwing and unscrewing a needle into a secure position--that are associated with needle sticks.

The system features 22 and 25 gauge needles that offer low cost and high performance by minimizing kinking and improving overall performance; a 19 gauge nitinol needle with a highly flexible construction that facilitates easy passage through tortuous positions and a quad bevel design that allows for optimal tissue yield and coring potential; an ergonomic release button designed for fast, efficient removal of needles; and a proprietary glide ball feature that allows for the interchangeability of all needle sizes through a universal delivery system. The BNX system is a product of Beacon Endoscopic (Newton, MA, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

FNA is a diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps or masses. In this technique, a thin, hollow needle is inserted into the mass for sampling of cells that, after being stained, will be examined under a microscope; options include a cytology exam of aspirate (cell specimen evaluation, FNAC) or histological (biopsy - tissue specimen evaluation, FNAB).
