Total Knee Arthroplasty System Addresses Patient Requirements

By HospiMedica International staff writers

A novel posterior total knee arthroplasty (TKA) solution provides improved stability, deeper flexion, and superior wear characteristics. More...

The Movation TKA system is based on a posterior stabilized (PS) design, originally developed and patented by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS; New York, NY, USA), and is intended for use in posterior cruciate ligament deficient knees. The system includes a host of innovative features, including a constant axis femoral component, contoured insert condyles for reduced rotational stress, reduced and rounded trochlear transition, and anatomic femoral and baseplate components.

A key feature of the system is the instrumentation used to place the implant, which reduces the overall quantity of instruments, making workflow efficient and contributing to a reduced surgery time, thus benefiting the patient, the surgeon, and the hospital. Simple quick connect handles, color-coded buttons, and magnetic attachments contribute to the smooth flow and reliability of the procedure.

The Movation TKA system also features e+ vitamin E polyethylene, a cross-linked polyethylene blended with vitamin E and formulated to reduce long-term wear in knees. e+ is formulated specifically for knees, does not oxidize, and does not require a melt or anneal step, which can reduce the mechanical strength of the material or leave free radicals behind. The Movation TKA system is a product of DJO Global (San Diego, CA, USA).

“Patients needing a knee replacement are approaching surgeons with more demanding activity requirements,” said Bryan Monroe, senior vice president and general manager of DJO Surgical. “Our goal was to develop a knee system with features that we know have historically performed extremely well, but also incorporate assets that allow TKA patients to remain active, such as high flexion allowance, enhanced stability through flexion, and e-plus vitamin E polyethylene.”
