Powered Endostapler Offers Graduated Compression

A reusable, fully powered surgical stapling platform offers push-button operation and unlimited articulation of all stapler controls using just one hand. More...

The iDrive Ultra powered stapling system offers fingertip control of clamping, articulation, rotation, firing and opening, reducing unwanted motion during all stapling actions, with articulation within the 45-degree left/right range, enabling surgeons to place the device where they want it and keep it there throughout the stapling application. The system can be used in both in minimally invasive and open surgery, and is fully compatible with the complete line of Covidien Endo GIA reloads with Tri-Staple technology, providing consistent performance over a broader range of tissue thickness.

The Tri-Staple technology reloads are designed to work in harmony with the natural properties of tissue to optimize performance, using a stepped cartridge face and three staggered rows of staples for graduated compression between the tissue and stapler, thus allowing greater perfusion into the staple line and the treatment of variable tissue thicknesses. An improved fixed anvil and I-beam design incorporated into the Tri-Staple reloads also results in higher staple line strength, leak resistance, and hemostasis. The iDrive Ultra powered stapling system and Tri-Staple technology are products of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland).

“Laparoscopic surgery can be an exceptionally labor-intensive endeavor that requires a high level of accuracy within a very restricted anatomical space,” said Paul Hermes, vice president and CTO of Covidien Surgical Solutions. “The iDrive Ultra powered stapling system will enable surgeons to operate through restricted anatomical space with greater precision, compared with traditional endomechanical staplers.”
