Capsule System Supports Noninvasive Small Intestine Observation

Posted on 11 Jun 2014
A new, small-bowel capsule-endoscopy system produces high-quality images for fast, efficient, and precise examinations.

The Olympus EndoCapsule 10 System features advanced lens technology and a sensitive, high-resolution image sensor that provide clear and vivid images up to the level of individual villi. More...
Noise has also been markedly reduced along with halation, optimizing brightness levels for detailed observation of small-intestine mucosa and identification of abnormalities. The expanded angle of view (160°) offers a significantly enhanced field of observation. Battery life is an extended 12 hours to increase the ratio of completed small-intestine observations and maximize the detection rate of lesions.

Intelligent software built into the system simplifies the reading and analysis of the captured imagery, automatically detecting images that require closer inspection and indicating where each thumbnail image was captured. A three dimensional (3D) tracking function allows the system to display the capsule position inside the body to check its progress as it moves through the intestine. In addition to improvements in the imaging and software technologies, the system also features improvements that increase ease of use for clinicians and patients.

A lightweight, compact, recorder unit worn by the patient includes an improved harness and a slim, lightweight antenna unit, which is incorporated in the belt harness. The recorder can be worn over clothes, rather than applied directly to the skin, and allows for quick initialization. Images can be viewed in real time or downloaded to the system's workstation, where software analyzes the recorded images for similarity, bubbles, debris, and the amount of red color. The workstation also integrates into existing hospital information systems (HISs) for fast and easy data sharing. The Olympus EndoCapsule 10 System is a product of Olympus (Tokyo, Japan).

“The new EndoCapsule 10 System offers advanced, minimally invasive technology designed to improve diagnostic capabilities, procedural efficiency and patient comfort,” said Luke Calcraft, president of the medical systems group at Olympus Corporation of the Americas. “The system can help facilities fulfill the requirements of healthcare reform aimed at improving quality of care, decreasing costs and enhancing patient satisfaction.”
