Biomaterial for Laparoscopic Repair of Hernia

Once the biomaterial is affixed to the abdominal wall by sutures or tacks, the control layer can be easily and swiftly removed. To aid the fixation, the surface of the biomaterial features visual guides to help determine spacing of tacks and sutures.

The biomaterial, developed by W. Gore and Associates (Flagstaff, AZ, USA), is called Dualmesh Emerge. The company says that in three days this biomaterial elicits a stronger bond to the abdominal wall than polypropylene mesh. It also features the company's Corduroy tissue ingrowth surface. Composed of ridges and furrows, the surface encourages rapid strong ingrowth.

‘The Emerge component addresses the operative handling of the product,” said Angela Elterich, Gore product specialist. ‘The advantage of temporary shape memory is that ultimately the patient is left with a soft, supple, and strong biomaterial adjacent to bowel and viscera.”
