Antibiotic Hydrogel Wound and Burn Dressing

A new antibiotic hydrogel dressing is designed for the care of wounds and burns. More...
The dressing has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The dressing is a unitary construction that is absorbent, with reduced tendency to adhere to skin lesions. It is placed directly on the wound, with the hydrogel in direct contact with the wound. The dressing is designed to absorb five times its own weight of wound exudates by hydrophilic action. With hydration, the hydrogel forms close contact with the wound, minimizing dead space. Since it does not adhere to tissue, removal is painless.

The medicated dressing is manufactured by CardioTech International, Inc. (Woburn, MA, USA) from the company's patented hydrophilic polyurethane, which is specifically designed to absorb exudates and protect the wound without the need to remove the dressing for inspection. Antibiotic medication aids prevention of bacterial infection. The dressing is indicated for abrasions, burns, lacerations, blisters, superficial wounds, diabetic ulcers, and donor sites.

"The market for this product is substantial, and as far as we know, CardioTech is the only company in the market with a medicated hydrogel sheet product,” said Dr. Michael Szycher, CEO of CardioTech. "Chronic wounds represent a serious threat to quality of life and loss of income.”
