Test Improves End-of-Life Care

Following years of research, clinicians have developed a new objective test to support end-of-life decisions, providing dying patients with more appropriate care and greater dignity.

Called PrognostiCheck, the test is based on an established noninvasive diagnostic technique. More...
This technique captures and reports a basic level of cellular physiology, illustrating the plasma cell membrane, which results in a value that can be positive, neutral, or negative. The test is repeated over time to track the dynamic changes in each patient in order to optimize treatment and also to recognize when treatment may no longer be effective. The test was developed by IPGDx (Harrisville, MI, USA).

Of the 2.5 million people who die each year in the United States, about 80% die in healthcare institutions and not at home. Of these, more than one-third die in an intensive care unit (ICU). According to IPGDx, 70% suffer significant pain and 60% experience difficulty breathing. Also, 30% of ICU patients express end-of-life decisions that are ignored. Fewer than 40% of deaths occur in hospices, where nearly half die within the first two weeks.

An analysis of the test will help doctors support treatment decisions and prognoses as well as the timing of non-acute death. Patients and their families are provided with information that helps them understand treatment options, preserves their comfort, and allows a realistic estimate of time of death. Doctors are supported in their treatment decisions and the transition to palliative and hospice care.
