Alliance for Intravascular Detection Devices

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Apr 2001
An alliance to develop novel, intravascular devices capable of identifying atherosclerotic lesions has been formed by Photon Imaging, Inc. More...
(Northridge, CA, USA) and Imetrx, Inc. (Menlo Park, CA, USA).

Imetrx has been pursuing a number of technologies that could be used to diagnose both the presence and the status of plaque in arteries. The company recently announced a licensing agreement with Nidus Medical involving the development of complementary technologies for the detection and treatment of plaque.

Photon Imaging has developed new medical products based on its high-performance x-ray, gamma ray, and charged particle detectors. Now, the company plans to combine its sensor technology with the expertise of Imetrx in plaque-binding radiotracers in order to develop a device that will enable cardiologists to identify patients at high risk for serious coronary events due to the presence of rupture-prone plaque.

"We can essentially package a scintillation detector within a catheter that can be inserted within coronary or peripheral arteries. Currently, no product on the market can perform this task,” said Vartan Ghazarossian, Ph.D., president and CEO of Imetrx.
