By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 26 Apr 2001
A new device that can rapidly detect levels of drugs of abuse and alcohol is designed for use in emergency medical testing, law enforcement, and workplace testing.

Called Impact, the test device is based on flow immunosensor technology licensed from the U.S. More...
Naval Research Laboratories by LifePoint, Inc. (Ontario, CA, USA). This technology is used in conjunction with LifePoint's patented technologies employing saliva as a noninvasive test specimen to offer a broadly applicable, noninvasive, rapid, on-site diagnostic test system. The first product being commercialized is for the simultaneous detection of drugs of abuse and alcohol.

"Law enforcement officials will be able to quickly and noninvasively identify drug and alcohol impairment in drivers, and, in the emergency room, physicians will be able to immediately determine the drug blood levels of overdose victims,” said Lawrence A. Reynolds, vice president , sales and marketing, LifePoint. The company plans to add new chemistries for the disposable detection cassettes as a way to address other applications, including therapeutic drug monitoring and wellness screening.
