Miniature CO2 Sensor Cleared by FDA

Posted on 02 May 2001
A miniaturized version of a sensor that measures sublingual CO2 levels has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Tissue CO2 measurement correlates with other more invasive and costly indicators of a patient's changing condition, says the developer, Optical Sensors Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA; www.opsi.com). The new, smaller sensor, called CapnoProbe Model 2000, reduces the size of the instrument to a hand-held battery-operated instrument. This allows practical application in such hectic environments as the emergency department and operating rooms.

"Healthcare professionals can monitor CO2 levels of multiple patients much more easily, similarly to the manner in which temperature levels are currently taken with a portable instrument and disposable sensor,” noted Paulita LaPlante, president and CEO of OSI.
The company, which specializes in low-cost, fiber optic sensors and instruments, has also developed an on-demand blood gas monitoring system.
