Assay Measures Patient's Immune System Function

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 May 2007
A new assay directly measures the state of a patient's immune system functioning from a single drop of blood.

The assay, called ImmuKnow, is currently incorporated into patient protocols at a number of U.S. More...
hospitals and clinics. It is a standardized cellular assay, easily performed in the lab, and provides quick and accurate results. By optimizing therapy, ImmuKnow helps the physician lower the cost of treatment and improve treatment outcome, reduce the side effects of drugs, and enhance the patient's prospects for long-term quality of life.

ImmuKnow, Cylex's (Columbia, MD, USA) immune function test, guides therapies relating to organ transplants. The information yielded by the assay can be used to help guide doctors in administering the correct amount of immunosuppressant drugs to transplant patients. While the Cylex test has been initially applied to organ transplants, the assay can also be effectively used in a wide range of other therapeutic areas, including bone marrow transplants, autoimmune disorders, cancer, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunosuppressive virus (HIV).

Results from 21 clinical studies utilizing ImmuKnow were presented at the American Transplant Congress, May 4-9, 2007, in San Francisco (CA, USA). Concurrently, the company also participated in the European Federation of Immunogenetics (EFI) in Barcelona, Spain.

ImmuKnow has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
