Automated Clinical Chemistry Analyzers Measure Small Dense LDL Cholesterol

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 06 Aug 2007
A simple test performed on a fully automated clinical chemistry analyzer measures the amount of small dense (sd) low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in blood. More...

The new test gives results in 30 minutes. The method supersedes the current electrophoresis method, which assesses the pattern of LDL to identify type A (predominantly large LDL) or type B (predominantly small LDL), which is time-consuming, requires specialist equipment and operators, and gives only qualitative results.

Two LDL subtypes, small dense and large buoyant LDL, have been identified as having a role in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Genetic and nutritional factors affect the size of the LDL particles. The small, more atherogenic LDL particles penetrate the inner layer of the coronary arteries more easily, are more susceptible to oxidization, and bind proteoglycans, all of which increase the risk of CVD. Determination of sd LDL in a patient sample can help clinicians profile higher risk individuals and improve prognosis through adjusted treatment. Released by Randox (Crumlin, UK) the test is now being used in routine lipid laboratories.
