Brachytherapy by Radiation Oncologists or Cardiologists?

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 23 May 2001
The American College of Radiology (ACR) has issued a statement in support of having radiation oncologists perform brachytherapy when it is indicated for treating restenosis and keeping arteries open. More...
The ACR notes the publicity given to the procedure as it becomes more popular and cites public speculation that radiation oncologists, who have the most training in working with radiation, are more likely than cardiologists to perform the relatively new procedure.

J. Frank Wilson, M.D., chair of the ACR Commission on Radiation Oncology, points out that radiation oncologists have five years of additional training in the therapeutic use of ionizing radiation to treat malignant and benign conditions in addition to their medical school and internship experience.

"This procedure is new and complex and must be done very carefully,” said Dr. Wilson. "Radiation oncologists are best able to use and evaluate brachytherapy optimally for restenosis because of their specific training and experience.”
