DNA-Based Reagents for Detecting Hemochromatosis

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 24 May 2001
A new line of DNA-based analyte specific reagents (ASR) for hereditary hemochromatosis has been launched. More...
The new ASRs are used to detect the C282Y and H63D mutations that account for more than 85% of all cases of the disorder.

If detected early, the disorder can be effectively treated. The new ASRs are the products of Bio-Rad Laboratories (Hercules, CA, USA). The ASRs are available in two versions for use with different amplification technologies: linked linear amplification (LLA), which is Bio-Rad's proprietary method for amplification of nucleic acids, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based technology.

"Launching this product line is an important milestone for Bio-Rad,” said John Goetz, vice president of the company's Clinical Diagnostics Group, "because it enables all laboratories to offer hemochromatosis testing according to their own individual needs.”
