Biphasic Defibrillators with New Features

Two new defibrillator models for treating victims of sudden cardiac arrest have been introduced by Agilent Technologies Inc. More...
(Palo Alto, CA, USA; ). Both are based on the company's Smart biphasic technology.

The new Heartstream XLT is specifically designed for patient transport situations where it would be used by responders trained in either basic or advanced life support. When operating in the automatic external defibrillation (AED) mode, the XLT provides audio and visual cues that guide responders through patient analysis and shock delivery. When operating in the manual mode, the XLT allows an experienced responder to use the device's advanced features for pre- and post-shock monitoring and treatment.

The Heartstream FR2 AED offers several improvements over its predecessor, the Forerunner. It has a brighter electrocardiogram (ECG) display for more contrast in intense light or dark environments, it offers a 300% increase in battery capacity, it is capable of 300 shocks and 12 hours of operating time, and it offers improved visual and audio prompts that enhance operation.

Agilent states that both devices deliver low-energy, Smart biphasic therapy, proven in clinical studies to defibrillate more effectively than traditional high-energy waveforms, which can cause severe heart dysfunction.
