Automated Monitoring for Critical Care Patients

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 23 Jan 2002
An automated patient monitoring system is designed to provide minimally invasive, continuous monitoring of the cardiovascular and oxygenation status of critical care and surgical patients. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The system, called Roda, reports real-time calculation of cardiac output and total oxygen delivered to the patient. Trending and numerical displays of physiologic parameters assist in decisions on drug usage, ventilator settings, blood transfusions, and other medical interventions. The monitor contains a single-patient, disposable sensor attached to the patient's arterial catheter that automatically measures several blood chemistries and blood gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) for up to three days. The closed system samples the patient's blood, performs and reports the measurements, and then returns the blood to the patient. Thus, Roda offers the advantages of automation combined with better infection control and the elimination of patient blood loss. Roda is the product of Metracor Technologies, Inc. (San Diego, CA, USA; www.metracor.com).

"Roda is the first monitoring system for hospital surgery and intensive care applications that automates the online monitoring and integration of the patient's key cardiovascular and blood oxygenation indicators,” said Hal W. DeLong, president and CEO of Metracor.
