New Imaging Technology for Monitoring Lung Volume

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Jan 2003
A new kind of imaging technology, called bioelectrical impedance tomography, is utilized in a bedside system for monitoring lung volume for neonates and adults.

Detection and monitoring of pulmonary edema by radiology is restricted by exposure to ionizing radiation. More...
PulmonaryScan is a patented real-time technology designed for this purpose that is noninvasive, uses no radiation, and is much less expensive than radiology. The bedside system is especially useful for monitoring lung volume in neonates since there is no radiation and it requires no collaboration from patients. The system can also provide more definite discrimination between pulmonary edema and unusual pulmonary infections that can appear to be very similar on chest radiography.

Biologic tissues are conductive, containing ions that act as charge carriers. Some tissues are better conductors than others because they contain more ions. Lung tissue has resistivity compared to most other soft tissues. Resistivity changes with inspiration as the alveoli swell and the signal has to flow around them. By monitoring this change, the distribution for ventilation can be seen. The Pulmonary Scan is the product of Maltron International (Rayleigh, UK).
