Implantable Wireless Device Monitors AAA Repair

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 18 Jun 2003
A device implanted as part of the endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is designed to monitor the intra-aneurysm pressure in high-risk patients.

The device, an intra-vascular telemetric communication system, requires no antenna, battery, or connecting leads. More...
It is attached to a polyester endovascular stent graft, prior to the repair procedure. The first implants took place in three patients in June 2003 at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York (NY, USA). In all three cases, aneurysm pressure readings were successfully transmitted to an external monitor during the procedure and in subsequent follow-ups. Called Remon ImPressure, the device was developed by Remon Medical Technologies, Ltd. (Caesarea, Israel).

"The pressure monitoring capability can provide early warning of potentially life-threatening situations and demonstrates the inherent value of Remon's unique acoustic communication,” said Hezi Himelfarb, CEO of Remon Medical Technologies. "We believe that our technology has many applications that will dramatically impact several areas within medicine.” The company also developed the RemonCHF (congestive heart failure), a device that provides unlimited, noninvasive home-based monitoring of the hemodynamic status of CHF patients.
